Statement of Wendy E. Long, Judicial Confirmation Network, on Nomination of Judge Leslie Southwick to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals
"Dick Durbin and others are engaging in character assassination of a stellar judge and an American patriot.
We've seen this movie before.
We are also seeing the same type of intellectual dishonesty in these attacks that we have seen before.
Senator Durbin is a case in point:
Durbin attacks Judge Southwick for not 'siding' with politically correct interests.
Apparently, in Senator Durbin's America there are certain categories of litigants in whose favor federal judges are supposed to rule.
But a judge's job is not to 'side' with anyone - it is to rule impartially based upon the law.
Durbin's line of attack clearly exposes the opposition to Judge Southwick as being driven by a disdain for the rule of law and a desire for a politicized judiciary.
The Senate needs to support Judge Southwick and reject the Durbin distortion of our Constitution."
