"Judge Roberts's opening statement provided a remarkable insight into
his deep understanding of our Constitutional system as well as a stark and
statesmanlike contrast to the petty attacks against him.
"He poetically expressed the majesty of the rule of law in our system:
the law is not about might, but about right. And his explanation that the
rule of law hinges on the independence of the judiciary must be kept in mind
as he fields questions over the next few days. In order to preserve that
independence -- on which the rule of law and our whole constitutional system
depend -- Judge Roberts cannot give answers that forecast or make
commitments about how he would rule in future cases."
